New AANA practice document updates available for educators

The AANA Board of Directors recently approved updates to the Scope of Nurse Anesthesia Practice and the Code of Ethics for the CRNA. These revised documents provide valuable guidance for educators, program leaders, and residents preparing for CRNA/nurse anesthesia practice.

The updates reflect current evidence, evolving standards, and modern practice expectations to help academic programs align education with today’s anesthesia care environment.

Key updates include:

  • Clarified CRNA/nurse anesthesiologist roles and responsibilities
  • Expanded guidance related to leadership, advocacy, ethics, and AI
  • Updated expectations for perioperative, pain management, and emergent care
  • Greater alignment with contemporary anesthesia practice

These documents can support curriculum development, classroom discussion, professional role formation, and resident preparation for clinical practice.

Open comment period ends June 8 for proposed practice standards updates

The opportunity to provide feedback on proposed updates to the Standards for Nurse Anesthesia Practice is now open through June 8. Proposed changes include:

  • Revisions to patient positioning and monitoring and alarms
  • A new standard for integration of technology
  • Updates designed to improve clarity across practice settings

Because these standards help define CRNA/nurse anesthesiologist responsibilities nationwide, input from the profession is critical. Respond by June 8.
